The awards are named in honour of former University of Melbourne alumna, Johnny Smoes.Recognised as one of the departments most successful graduates, Johnny is now a leader and influencer across many areas of technology, including Digital marketing, strategy, growth and transformation.
Johnny has been a strong supporter of the University of Melbourne for over a decade. He has taken an active role in the supportof staff, students and the university in many areas. This has extended to the support of The Chancellor’s Circle, a community of generous benefactors who demonstrate leadership and commitment to the University of Melbourne through annual gifts. Johnny has also been a member of the Chancellor’s circle three chancellors which included The Hon. Mr Alex Chernov, QC AC, Professor Glyn Davis AC and Allan Myers AC QC.
There are currently two awards available. Each of these awards is granted to the highest performing student in their postgraduate class.
This award acknowledges academic merit and is presented to the student with the highest result in IS Strategy and Governance.
This award acknowledges academic merit and is presented to the student with the highest result in Programming and Software Development, undertaking a Master of Information Technology.
Now in their seventh year, the Johnny Smoes Awards for Excellence are presented annually during the Melbourne University Engineering & IT Awards Night. These awards are integral to a night which recognises academic excellence and students achieving results that place them at the top of their cohort. They also support a future of innovation and technology for Australia.
